The Thoroughbred Racehorse Owner’s Association (TROA), with the support of Racing Victoria and the RSPCA, is developing a re-homing project for retired racehorses. The core objective of the project is to provide solutions that enable the lives of horses to extend beyond their racing careers. The objectives of the TROA are to;
• Educate horse owners and the broader community about the current situation
• Prevent the cruelty and suffering of horses post their racing career
• Provide a solution to enable the lives of horses beyond racing to be commensurate with contemporary animal health standards
• Implement this solution with minimal damage to the industry
Both trainers and owners share the hope their horses will have success on the track. While much focus is placed on the glamour and financial returns of owning a great performer, too often little thought is put into what options exist for a horse beyond racing.
MJH Group Marketing and Sandman PR are assisting the TROA with developing the strategy for this project and facilitation of a workshop involving all stakeholders who will be working towards a solution.

TAX HELP FOR HORSE FLU VICTIMS:
The Australian Taxation Office is offering assistance to businesses directly affected by equine influenza & the resulting quarantine measures. Tax Commissioner Michael D'Ascenzo announced: "We will work with people affected during this difficult time to help them meet their tax obligations. We understand equine influenza has directly affected the income of many people involved in the horse & related industries.
Anyone who is having problems meeting their tax obligations should call us as soon as possible so we can make arrangements to suit their individual circumstances. Your tax agent can also contact us on your behalf." D'Ascenzo noted the Tax Office can help by: fast tracking refunds; giving extra time to pay debts (without interest charges); arranging for tax debts to be paid in instalments; waiving any penalties or interest that may have been imposed; & considering waiving the general interest charge in some super guarantee cases. |

The recent outbreak of Equine Influenza has elevated thoroughbred racing to the number one media story in Australia beyond its normal station, that being Melbourne Cup week and its associated pageantry.
It is because of this elevation that a number of media commentators in this state have felt compelled to comment on the issue, but have disappointingly done so with either naivety or just very poor research and advice. More Info. |

Dear Fellow Owner
I write with reference to the current racing industry review.
The stakeholders in racing (Owners, Breeders, Trainers, Jockeys, Bookmakers and representative employee bodies) are striving to be given a proper voice in the way racing is run in Victoria through the current review.
As TROA Chairman, I am working hard to give owners a great part of that voice and I need your help. This is a once in a lifetime opportunity to be a direct part of the decision making process.
I urge you and any owner that you may know to 'send this letter' to the Minister for Racing to inform him that all owners are united in this endeavour.
Good luck with your horses.
Regards
David Moodie
